Pi Tapestry
A tapestry has been commissioned to hang in the clock tower and is being woven by Dovecot Studios in Edinburgh .
Dovecot Studios is based in central Edinburgh where during the second half of 2026 the tapestry is being woven. It can be viewed during the Edinburgh Festival.
The concept of the tapestry is the mathematical expansion of the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter known as pi and starts 3.14159. The tapestry will show 1024 digits in colours which represent each digit.
The design
The design of the tapestry is derived from the first 1024 digits in the decimal expansion of the irrational number pi. Each of the digits 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 is allocated a different colour white, dark red green blue yellow, black, light red green blue yellow. Each square is 3 inches by 3 inches, to match the height of the bricks of the clock tower wall on which it will hand.
Progress
Weaving is taking place from the bottom up. There are 41 lines each 25 squares long. This page will show the latest progress with the weaving.
